As parents and teachers we can help cultivate a taste for reading.

Creative Ways to get your children to love reading!

~ Model reading

~ Have book discussions

~ Help them pick out books that relate to their hobbies and interests

~ Do Poetry Theatre together~ act out the poem! It's a hoot!

~ Give them a book allowance.  In addition to the regular amount you give for an allowance, add a little extra in their for them to buy a book.

~ Spend time together reading!

Here is a Fun Activity

Create your own Myth or Legend

For instance: How a Monkey got its tail...... or

Then post it here:

Buzz

This games puts fun into flashcards while reinforcing sight words and giving children a chance to move around.

1.   Write sight words on index cards

2.   Add cards that say BUZZ to the index cards

3.   Shuffle the word cards, then gather students to play. Have them sit in a circle.

4.   Flash the first word. If it is a sight word, have the students read it. If it says “buzz” everyone one gets to jump up and buzz around the room.

5.   Continue to the next card.

Why Read Poetry?

  • Poetry exposes children to the the sound of language
  • It can be used to celebrate reading
  • It is a fun, short, tasty morsel to share with children
  • It can be  a great vehicle for learning how complex thoughts, humorous ideas, deep emotions, or entire narratives can be expressed with a few carefully chosen words.
  •

Why Read P is for Poetry

It is a great collection of poems that also incorporates  ways to integrate poetry activities into the classroom and the daily routines of children.

      Here are some addtional ideas:

      • Find synonyms/antonyms. I would say a word and the children would search for a synonym/antonym. Sometimes I told them in which stanza to search.
      • Work on alphabetical order using words from "old" poems.
      • Use words from "old" poems in word sorts.
      • Find the nouns (verbs, adjectives).
      • Find the contractions and possessives. Since both have apostrophes, the students had to use the context to decide which it was.
      • Paraphrase a short poem. You can see the rhythm of the poem disappear as it turns to prose. It really illustrates the difference.

Play this game for Phonic's Fun

    Your It ~ A-Z

Can be played with 2 to 101 players.

First person starts with an A word then the next player must quickly say a b word, and so on. If a person can’t think of a word they are out. To make it more challenging you can have them remember the previous words.

    Write your own Tongue Twisters!

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
He would chuck, he would, as much as he could,
and chuck as much wood as a woodchuck would
if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

    Create an afterschool Poetry Club!

Host a Poetry and Punch Day!
